How to Replace a Broken Blind Lift Cord


A broken blind lift cord can leave a Venetian, mini, or faux-wood blind stuck in one position, hanging unevenly, or impossible to raise safely. The good news is that a snapped cord does not automatically mean the blind needs replacing. In many cases, the lift cord can be replaced—provided the headrail, cord lock, drums, ladders, and slats are still in good condition.

Lift cords are the thin strings that run from the bottom rail, through the slats and headrail, and out through the cord lock. They carry the weight of the blind every time it is raised or lowered.

Common signs of a failed lift cord include:

  • One side of the blind hangs lower than the other.

  • The cord is visibly frayed, broken, or missing.

  • The blind raises on one side only.

  • The blind is stuck up after a cord snapped.

  • The pull cord has pulled into the headrail.

  • The blind drops unevenly or slats bunch on one side.

First: do not pull harder or tie a quick knot

Avoid yanking on the remaining cord, pulling the bottom rail down hard, or tying a short knot in the exposed section and continuing to use the blind. A knot can catch in the cord lock or headrail, while a hard pull can damage the cord lock, drum, ladders, or bottom rail.

If a cord has snapped while the blind is raised, support the bottom rail before removing the blind from its brackets. A large faux-wood blind can be heavy and awkward to handle alone.


What you need before replacing the cord

A complete lift-cord replacement requires more than a piece of string. Have the following ready:

  • Replacement lift cord of the same diameter as the original.

  • Tape measure.

  • Scissors or cord cutters.

  • Small flat screwdriver.

  • Needle-nose pliers.

  • A lighter or heat source to seal a synthetic cord end, used carefully.

  • Masking tape and a marker to label cord paths.

  • A clean work surface large enough for the blind.


The replacement cord must fit the holes in the slats, route cleanly through the cord lock, and wind properly around the lift drums. Cord that is too thick can bind; cord that is too thin can wear quickly or slip through components.


How much replacement cord do you need?

A common starting calculation for each lift cord is:

(2 × blind length) + blind width

Then multiply that amount by the number of lift-cord runs in the blind. Add extra length for routing, knots, and trimming. Every blind is different, so use this as a planning estimate—not a substitute for tracing the existing cord path.


Step-by-step: replacing a broken blind lift cord

Step 1: Photograph the blind before taking anything apart

Take clear photos of the cord lock side, both ends of the headrail, the bottom rail plugs, and the route of every intact cord. These photos are extremely helpful if cords cross or if your blind has multiple lift drums.

If only one cord has broken, do not remove an intact cord until you understand its route. It can be your best reference for the replacement path.


Step 2: Remove the blind and place it on a protected work surface

Raise or support the blind as much as the remaining cords allow. Release the headrail from its mounting brackets while someone supports the weight if the blind is large. Lay it flat on a clean table, floor covering, or workbench with the slats facing upward.

Remove the valance and tilt wand if they obstruct access. Keep every plug, cap, and screw in a small container.


Step 3: Inspect whether the cord lock or lift drums are damaged

Look inside the headrail for a cracked cord lock, bent metal, jammed cord, broken drum, or sharp edge that could have cut the old cord. If the cord broke near the cord lock, the lock may be the cause rather than the victim.

Do not install new cord through a visibly damaged component. It will usually fray again quickly. This is the point where matching the exact replacement part matters.


Step 4: Remove the bottom-rail plugs and release the old cord

Turn the bottom rail over. Small plugs usually hide the knots that anchor the lift cords. Gently remove the plugs with a small flat screwdriver. Untie or carefully cut the old cord, keeping note of which cord came through each hole.

Do not cut ladder strings. Lift cords raise and lower the blind; ladder strings support and tilt the slats. They are different parts with different routes.


Step 5: Use an intact cord as a route guide where possible

The new cord normally travels from the bottom rail, up through the slats, through the headrail, around a lift drum, through the cord lock, and down as the pull cord. The exact route varies by manufacturer and blind style.

For a simple, matching system, homeowners sometimes tape the new cord to the end of an intact old cord and draw it gently through the same route. Stop immediately if it catches. Forcing a cord can dislodge a drum or tangle the ladders.

If all cords are broken, if the path is unclear, or if the blind uses looping lift cords, a professional restring is usually the more reliable option.


Step 6: Thread the new cord through the bottom rail and slats

Start at the bottom rail and follow the original cord route upward through the slat holes. Keep the cord inside the ladder-string columns and make sure it is not twisted around a ladder.

As you work, keep the blind flat and the slats aligned. A cord routed outside the ladders can cause the blind to lift crookedly or damage the slats.


Step 7: Route the cord through the headrail components

Guide the cord through the correct lift drum and cord-lock openings. This is the most technical part of the repair. Some blinds use a simple drum and lock; others have multiple drums, guides, or looping routes.

If the cord will not pass through without force, stop. Do not enlarge holes, pry open the cord lock, or substitute a different path. The cord must move freely before the blind is reinstalled.


Step 8: Tie and seat the bottom-rail knots

With the blind still flat, pull the new cord snug—but not tight enough to bow the slats. Tie a secure knot below each bottom-rail hole, seat it inside the rail, trim only after checking the length, and reinstall the plugs.

The bottom rail should sit level. If it is tilted while the blind is fully lowered, recheck that each lift cord follows the correct route and has similar tension.


Step 9: Test the blind before reinstalling the valance

Support the headrail and test the blind slowly. It should raise evenly, lock when the cords are moved to the lock side, and lower smoothly when released at the correct angle. Inspect the cords for rubbing, binding, or a crooked lift.

If it binds, stop before raising it fully. A cord error is easier to correct while the blind is partially open than after it has tangled inside the headrail.


Step 10: Reinstall, test again, and restore cord safety hardware

Reinstall the blind, then test it several times. Refit any cord safety device exactly as designed. Keep accessible cords away from children and pets; do not remove tensioners, safety washers, or other original safety components.

Health Canada advises keeping cords out of reach of young children and avoiding loops that can present an entanglement hazard. If the blind’s original safety hardware is missing or damaged, replace it before returning the blind to regular use.

Lift-cord replacement is often repairable, but it is not always a quick DIY job. Book a professional assessment when:

  • The blind is wide, heavy, tall, or installed over stairs.

  • Multiple cords are broken or tangled.
